“Happy are the people who know the joyful shout.” Ps 89:15 (HCSB)
People who are not Christians do not have joy. Some would say that’s a bold or even untrue statement, but I (obviously) disagree with those people.
Joy comes from the Lord. And only Christians can experience true joy. Sure, non-Christians can have happiness. They can even be exceedingly happy about things or circumstances, but that happiness will wane.
Joy, however, lasts forever. It stands the test of time. Rough times occur in life. You may grieve the loss of a person, a job, a friendship, a status symbol, a home. But a Christian can stand back and say that despite the circumstance, they are still joyful in the Lord.
I know this firsthand. In the first two weeks of December 2010, I experienced the death of four people. I went to three funerals in nine days. And even though I feel strongly that at least two (and possibly three) of the people were Christians, it was still hard to digest. These funerals were not exactly parties. My friends and family were grieving and understandably so.
However, I walked away from each funeral knowing that Jesus could and would still fill my heart with joy. In times of uncertainty, fear or even loss, Jesus promises to stand with us as Christians. He promises to give us strength and to fill us with joy, if we will only allow Him to do so.
So, how about you? Will you allow the Father to cover over your heart with joy even in the midst of your current trials?
Interesting definition of “joy.” I know Buddhists who are joyful because of their faith. In fact, the most joyful people I’ve ever met were Buddhists. I prefer to think all people can experience the emotion of joy, and indeed wish it for all people, animals, and life forms, however they might experience it. Best wishes to you in the new year.
